It's been nearly six months since I've been in New York City, and my early predictions about what might happen here have been actualized- surrounding myself with opportunity and creative people has inspired me once again to accomplish something big. It's time for me to start using this website as a tool to provide opportunity. And so that's what I'm going to do. Introducing: The TravelMORE Campaign, an ongoing series of projects designed to provide opportunities for others to travel.
I was laying in bed a couple weeks ago, thinking about an old ambition that I had in my early 20's to ride a bicycle across the country in the name of a good cause. I've thought about it many times throughout the years, but the timing never seemed quite right, and for one reason or another, I put the idea on the back burner. Usually it was a job or a relationship that restrained me- you know, the same reasons we all make excuses from time to time about why we can't do the things we'd really love to do.
But, this logic is flawed, because if you have a burning desire to do something, it will always gnaw at you until you give it a go. Your significant other, if they truly support you, would encourage you to do the thing you really wanted. And your job, well, hopefully they'd understand too- if they didn't, would you really want to give your valuable life-hours to someone who didn't have any respect for them? These are things I'm always reminding people about, but sometimes, I need a reminder, too.
So, I was laying there, contemplating these things, and realized that I would always conjure up an excuse as to why the timing might not be right, and I would never do it until I put my back against the wall. Historically, that's when I tend to perform at my best. That's when I'm most driven to succeed. So I hit the "Go!" button, came up with an outline for a plan, and started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 to make dreams come true.
A lot of people are still curious about what exactly I'm trying to pull off and how, so here's the plan...
My ambition is two-fold:
- With half of the fundraising money I'll be able to get across the country by bicycle in one piece (I hope) and budget the help of some friends along the way to help me create a documentary about the journey and how a trip like this changes your life.
- With the other half, I will offer a travel abroad scholarship/credit-earning internship to change the life of another: a student who has a burning desire to travel and share their experiences through writing and video blogging. Their journey will be documented on the Wandrlustr website, and in turn, provide information and inspiration to other future travelers.
I truly believe that traveling (as opposed to vacationing) is the best and most useful form of education I have received in my life- I value it above my Bachelor's Degree. It changed my perspective on my entire reality and the way I interact with others. It changed my perspective on the things I consider to be important. It made me a better human being- and that is why I'm so passionate about extending that sort of opportunity to others. It's my way of making a positive impact in this world.
As Mahatma Gandhi wisely suggested, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Challenge accepted.
If you'd like to support my efforts to change the world for the better, please pay a visit to my GoFundMe page to find out more details. If you can't contribute financially, it would still be a huge help to share the post on Facebook, or any other social media platform. I want to make it fun for people to get involved, so I'm also offering some awesome personalized rewards for contributors to the campaign! Oh, and every contributor will be listed in the credits of the documentary!
Other ways you can help are putting me in contact with anyone who might be interested in sponsoring the journey- sneakers, clothes, food, camping gear, biking stuff, you name it! If you have any media contacts, that's another great way to help- they're always looking for a good story. Places to stay or things to see along the way will also be very helpful! I love to meet new people and see new things- that's what this is all about!
Thank you so much for those who have given me words of support already. The encouragement really means a lot to me. Help me make this first mission a successful one! With every journey comes wider eyes and a heightened awareness.
